Dr Elizabeth Joy was the first woman ever to be shortlisted as a nominee for the general secretary of the World Council of Churches. A director at Churches Together in England, she is from the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. She grew up in both India and the United Kingdom. Below, during an interview held the day after the WCC elections, she reflects on her roots in the ecumenical movement, and on her message to the WCC.

Webinar series: Theological Reflections on Hate Speech and Whiteness

A series of five webinars in five days convened by the World Council of Churches (WCC) will offer theological reflections on “Hate Speech and Whiteness.” Running from 19-23 October, the webinars are being produced bv the WCC’s Theological Study Group of the Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace.

Metropolitan Nicholovos: “We cannot afford to be bystanders”

In a lively online discussion entitled “Breaking Down the Walls,” the Northeast American Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church explored the racial injustices in our society, how racism plays a role in the Indian American community, and what Orthodox Christians can do.
Sunil Kurian, an attorney who resides in Philadelphia (USA) moderated the discussion, saying: “These are troubling times. We as Orthodox Christians must break down the walls of racism that separate us.”

Churches amplify urgent calls to address violent racism in US

As protests erupted in more than 30 cities across the US in the wake of the death of George Floyd, churches in the US collectively expressed anger combined with a clarion call for a change—once and for all—in a nation that has tolerated violent racism for too long.

Two candidates nominated for WCC general secretary

The search committee appointed by the central committee to prepare the election of the next general secretary of the World Council of Churches met this week, and has informed the moderator of the central committee, Dr Agnes Aboum, about the results of their work. The position will be vacant as of 1 April 2020 since the present general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, announced to the central committee in June 2018, that he would not stand for re-election for a third period after having served two five-year terms.
